Chris Kelly: Brown must admit mistakes
Chris Kelly, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Dudley South, has called for Gordon Brown to take responsibility for his mistakes. In a letter to the Express and Star Chris questioned the Prime Minister’s honesty, asking if he cant admit errors how can he offer a way out of the recession. The letter was as follows:
“Gordon Brown believes that, before the credit crunch, the British economy was fundamentally strong, which is why he won’t apologise or take any responsibility for what went wrong. He said he ended boom and bust, but we are now facing one of the deepest recessions in the developed world. If Gordon Brown can’t admit his past mistakes then how can he offer a way out of our problems?
Conservatives understand that, under Labour, the economy was built on debt. We offer a different routemap to economic recovery, based on savings and ownership not borrowing and debt. We will build a new low-carbon, high-skilled, productive and balanced economy that will be the engine of sustainable growth for years to come. And we will reform the public finances and system of financial regulation so that no Labour Government is able to bankrupt us again.
This week the NHS Confederation exposed Labour’s planned cuts to public spending. Labour are trying to deceive people by saying they can avoid spending cuts. Labour’s own spending plans – contained in this year’s Budget – show from 2011 a real cut in total spending. And, as calculated by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a 7 per cent cut in departmental spending over three years from 2011. If cuts to the health budget are to be avoided then the IFS calculate that Labour would have to cut other departments’ spending by 10 per cent over that period. These are Labour’s cuts.
These are the facts, which Gordon Brown won’t admit to, and they show that the Prime Minister’s claims that spending would rise year on year is simply untrue. Labour need to be honest with the public about the implications of their debt crisis for the public services.”
