Chris Kelly, Prospective Conservative MP for Dudley South, and Cllr Patrick Harley (Kingswinford South) today staged a light-hearted protest in Kingswinford against the ‘porky pies’ Gordon Brown has been telling since 1997. Commenting after the protest Chris said: “Gordon Brown has been stuffing the nation for years. We were inundated with Saturday shoppers wanting a ‘porky pies’ leaflet, in which we highlighted the main charges about Gordon Brown’s record in the Treasury and in Downing Street, and a helium balloon (in Conservative Party blue of course) for the kids. We even had passing motorists tooting their horns and giving us the thumbs up! Following Labour’s legacy conference trying to justify their 13 years in Government and our forward looking Conservative Party conference in Manchester detailing how we will mend Britain’s broken society and our broken economy it’s clear that people in Dudley increasingly agree with us that it’s time for change and that David Cameron is ready to lead our country to better times as our next Prime Minister.”

Whilst canvassing around Castle and Priory for the past week, I have noticed that many local residents are fed up with the British political system; they are fed up of MPs and Councillors. One resident I spoke to made it quite clear that he would not be voting for anyone as he considered politicians to be ‘in it for themselves’. I want to become a Councillor in order to be able to put something back into my community. To me personally, it is a way of saying thank you to those community and voluntary groups that have greatly influenced me and many others. My community has looked after me, but this government has not looked after my community. Levels of crime, unemployment and child poverty have risen alongside debt and house prices. And at the same time, the number of Police Constables has decreased, 4 out of 5 jobs created under Labour have gone to economic migrants. We now borrow money at a rate of £6000 a second; the failings in social care have led to a broken society and taxes have risen. For what?

Local politicians can only do a small part in keeping council tax low and providing the best services at the best prices. Though it is up to you, as the electorate, to send a clear message to Gordon Brown. We need to put across the message that we do not want 5 more years of Labour failings. We want a better country for our children to grow up in, without the fear of high taxes for generations to come. Taxes to pay for mis-management of our country.
